ESPN prediction for Georgia in 2024

The confetti from Michigan’s College Football Playoff National Championship victory is probably still in trash bags behind Houston’s NRG Stadium, but it’s never too early to start thinking about the upcoming college football season.

That’s apparently what ESPN thought, because they’ve already produced a “way-too-early” college football Top 25 ranking for the 2024 season.

Most of the expected programs are toward the top of the list, but it’s worth noting that, despite missing the CFP for the first time in three seasons, ESPN’s Mark Schlabach is optimistic about the Georgia Bulldogs bouncing back big time.

How big is it?

According to these rankings, UGA is ranked ahead of everyone, even the rising Texas Longhorns and the defending champion Michigan Wolverines.

What’s the reasoning?

Head coach Kirby Smart essentially reloaded on talent on the recruiting trail, bringing in the top-ranked class of 2024 to stack on top of the No. 2-ranked class of 2023.

Schlabach also expects quarterback Carson Beck to have a significant impact as a senior.

“The winning might not slow down with starting quarterback Carson Beck opting to return for his senior season. His experience will be invaluable during a 2024 schedule that kicks off with a high-stakes opener against Clemson in Atlanta,” he wrote.

Georgia will lose tight end Brock Bowers to the NFL, but the Bulldogs recently acquired Florida running back Trevor Etienne through the transfer portal. Etienne rushed for 753 yards and eight touchdowns for the Gators last season and could make an immediate impact for UGA.

Texas is ranked second, followed by Oregon at third and Alabama at fourth.

Michigan is predicted to slip off next season and may not even have Jim Harbaugh as head coach, so the Wolverines landing at No. 6 isn’t shocking. Washington, on the other hand, drops all the way to No. 11 with the departures of Michael Penix Jr., Rome Odunze, and Ja’Lynn Polk.
