ESPN Analyst Calls FSU Football’s Performance Against Georgia Bulldogs a ‘Disgrace’

After Florida State’s loss in the Orange Bowl, Chris Russo went on a rant about the Seminoles.

Florida State faced Georgia in the Orange Bowl on Saturday, a result that many Seminoles fans and players were not expecting after going 13-0 in the regular season and conference title game. They had numerous opt-out options for transfers, injuries, and draft declarations.

The team that played in the Orange Bowl was nothing like the one that went 13-0, and the players were justified to be upset after being denied entry into the College Football Playoffs. They ignored the snub and moved on to whatever came next.

This, however, infuriated many college football fans, media, and personalities. One of the most recent commentators on Florida State was ESPN’s Chris “Mad Dog” Russo.

“How about Florida State on Saturday afternoon,” the coach replied. “…Florida State had a chance for redemption, a chance to show the world that they belonged because they were playing Georgia in the Orange Bowl — Georgia, two-time National Champ — Georgia.” So, what are Florida State and its players going to do? For a variety of reasons, 29 players opted out of the game.”

Again, in a sport where participation is totally voluntary, college-aged players will do whatever they believe is best for them. Because the College Football Playoff committee handled the Seminoles as if the games didn’t matter, the players returned that energy.

“So, they go to the Orange Bowl on Saturday before New Year’s where people are paying their hard-earned money to go to Fort Lauderdale to go watch that game, and they show up like they don’t even care and they lost 63 to three,” he said. “And Georgia, who has won two championships in a row, shows up and Kirby Smart gets his guys to play.”

Georgia, on the other hand, had a lot to prove. They were defeated by Alabama in the SEC Championship game. As a one-loss club, they sought to prove they belonged in the top four. They were healthy and capable of doing so. Florida State understood it wouldn’t be able to field a comparable team.

“Florida State, that spent three weeks moaning and groaning about how they got royally screwed, they show up at that game in the Orange Bowl in front of all those fans and they lose 63 to three to a bunch of amateurs after they moaned and groaned about how they were messed up,” he said. “Oh, what an unbelievable disgrace!” What they did on Saturday astounded me. “You are a disgrace to college football, Seminoles.”

Russo says Florida State is a disgrace to college football, but the Seminoles may fairly say that college football shamed them. It’s difficult to imagine an unbeaten conference winner in a Power Five league missing the playoffs ever again. The new 12-team playoff format is beneficial, but it should not have happened in the previous four-team playoffs.

Who knows who would have played if the Seminoles had advanced to the playoffs? Perhaps their defense would have come through once more. Quinn Ewers and Jalroe’s stats were neither spectacular nor eye-popping. If the game had been tight, Brock Glenn or Tate Rodemaker’s numbers would have been identical, and the story would have been spectacular.
