Omari Hutchinson joined Ipswich Town on a season-long loan from Chelsea in the summer and has started all of the Tractor Boys’ games, proving to be a popular figure at Portman Road.
Despite appearing in practically every game, Hutchinson has struggled to get a start, which may annoy parent club Chelsea, who will undoubtedly want the 20-year-old to play as much football as possible this season.
It puts the West London club in a tight position.
Do they re-call Hutchinson and loan him to a team where he’ll start every week, or do they let him sit on the bench at Portman Road in a side looking for automatic promotion?
After turning 20 in October, this is the attacking midfielder’s maiden loan and first taste of professional football. It may be argued that starting every game for a team with nothing to play for would benefit the youngster more than beginning every game for a team with nothing to play for.
Chelsea, after all, wants to compete for silverware in the near future. It seems reasonable to give one of their greatest prospects a taste of striving for promotion and success while playing in a good, competitive side.
Omari Hutchinson’s Ipswich Town career
Following promotion to the Championship, Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna was clear that the team would need to strengthen in the summer.
Hutchinson, a former Chelsea player, joined the Tractor Boys on a season-long loan in July, becoming the club’s fourth summer signing.
His versatility is vital, as he can play as an attacking midfielder and on both sides of the wing for Ipswich this season.
He has appeared in nearly every game for the team this season, but has mostly done so off the bench. He’s still an important part of McKenna’s plans, and he scored his second league goal of the season in the club’s recent 2-0 win against Middlesbrough.
He’s an important component of Ipswich Town’s squad depth, and players like Hutchinson will be needed throughout the season if the club is to maintain its automatic promotion campaign against the likes of Leeds United and Southampton.
Hutchinson has a 73% passing accuracy rate, a 59% successful dribbling rate, and has produced four huge chances this season, according to Sofascore.
Omari Hutchinson’s future at Ipswich Town
Manager McKenna told the East Anglian Daily Times in November that Hutchinson is unlikely to be recalled by Chelsea.
He stated, “He’s coming on really well.”Being among such a mature, driven, and focused group has been a really wonderful experience for him. We have a very tough atmosphere in which the players train at a high level every day, and he has fully embraced that culture.
I think they’re quite flush with left-footed, right-sided attackers, so it’s not a phone call we’re expecting, but you never know with loans. Of course, we recognize that he is not our player.
“I believe that at the moment, all parties – our club, certainly the player and his family, and his parent club – see the benefits of the exposure that he’s receiving here.” Everyone is very delighted with the situation, and it appears that it will remain thus.”
Chelsea appear to be wise in allowing Hutchinson to stay at Portman Road until the conclusion of the season. The opportunity to compete for promotion at Ipswich will help the 20-year-old’s career more than any mid-table loan could.
