Wheelchair athletes are honored with awards after an incredible triple

The Leicester Tigers Wheelchair Rugby team received its three trophies following a historic, treble-winning season at halftime of Tigers’ Premiership Cup game versus Newcastle Falcons.

The Mattioli Woods Welford Road audience joyously celebrated the accomplishments of this remarkable bunch of players as they received the three awards from Leicester Tigers CEO Andrea Pinchen and Director Tom Scott.

The team just won the WR5’s Premiership after an impressive, unbeaten run to the top that included three victories over rival Northampton Saints, one of which featured a memorable last-second goal. This success was the latest in a string of titles the team has won.

Amazingly, this was not only the team’s third championship of the 2022–23 season but also the third competition they had won by going unbeaten in every game.

Tigers took a plane to Poland in November 2022 to take part in the International Wheelchair Rugby 5 competition. A team of 10 players, led by Paralympic gold medalist Jamie Stead, who was also playing as coach, won all of their games to set up a dramatic all-England final versus Northampton Saints.

The two teams were unbreakable throughout the game, which went all the way to sudden-death overtime, and the suspense was apparent. But once more, Tigers won the day, taking home the international gold.

Following this, the team won the Fours Premiership in August 2023 after going undefeated in a string of tense matches against opponents like London Storm, who were bolstered by two Paralympic Gold Medalists and a previous Best in Class at the 2006 World Championships.

Sebastain Verdin, a French international who was outstanding throughout the series, was also made his debut in this competition.

Being undefeated in any one tournament is certainly an accomplishment, but to be undefeated in three in one season is extraordinary. The Leicester Tigers Wheelchair Rugby team will always remember this year as a memorable one.
