Eagles Stay Busy With New Signings Before Free Agency…

The Philadelphia Eagles have added three players in the previous three weeks at spots where depth is a problem. Let’s take a deeper look at each.

The eye of the offseason NFL storm is approaching. Until then, the Philadelphia Eagles are experiencing a period of quiet before the storm.

They’ve made three transfers so far as the calendar counts down to the start of the new league year on March 13 and the three days before that, known as the legal tampering period. That’s when thunder and lightning strike, followed by a deluge of money.

Philadelphia Eagles: Nick Sirianni left his mark on first career win

Those three motions could result in large splashes or small puddles, depending on the outcome.

Here’s a look at each of the players they signed on reserve/future contracts:

Julian Okwara, linebacker. Signed on Valentine’s Day, this could end up being the sweetest agreement of the three. Everyone understands that the Eagles need linebackers. Even General Manager Howie Roseman. Okwara has a great resume despite his young age of 26.

He was drafted in the third round by the Detroit Lions in 2020 and appeared in 38 games, starting nine of them. He played 36 defensive snaps against the Eagles in 2021 and recorded three tackles, one for a loss, as the Eagles won 44-6. He didn’t play versus Philadelphia in the 2022 season opener.

Okwara had seven tackles and two sacks in nine games last year, but he was released before the Lions’ NFC Divisional Round game. He was signed to the practice squad the next day, but Detroit did not give him a future deal.

You wonder why he didn’t stay there, but perhaps the Notre Dame graduate will find a good fit with a new team and Vic Fangio’s defense.

Tyrion Davis-Price, RB – Stop me if you’ve heard this before. San Francisco 49ers running back, chosen in the third round, signs with the Eagles. This time, it is Davis-Price.

Trey Sermon was maintained by the Eagles for a year before being cut after training camp the next year, and he was finally claimed by the Indianapolis Colts.

Davis-Price, like Sermon, was a third-round pick, but unlike Sermon, he came from LSU and was drafted in 2022. Davis-Price’s professional history is limited to seven games and 40 carries for 120 yards.

While the Eagles do need linebackers, they also need running backs, as Kenny Gainwell is the only one on the roster under contract.

If he demonstrates his ability to play, Davis-Price could find a place in coachn  KelleMoore’s scheme.

Darian Kinnard, OT – The fifth-round draft pick in 2022 from the University of Kentucky has two Super Bowl rings with the Kansas City Chiefs. He contributed one game in 2022. Last year, he spent the entire season on the practice squad. At Kentucky, he was a first-team All-American who started 39 consecutive games at one time.

The Eagles need depth at tackle behind mainstays Lane Johnson and Jordan Mailata, especially with Jack Driscoll potentially available in free agency.

Philly also has Fred Johnson and Brett Toth, but adding another under-the-radar player – who spent two years with one of football’s best-run teams – for line coach Jeff Stoutland to shape is never a bad idea.
