Eagles’ head coach spoke with reporters in Indianapolis on Jalen Hurts’ improvement  quarterback

The Eagles’ head coach spoke with reporters in Indianapolis on Jalen Hurts’ improvement as a leader and quarterback, as well as why he is thrilled to work with new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore.

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni was in Indianapolis this week with Howie Roseman for the NFL Combine, where he spoke with reporters on Tuesday regarding the roster. He discussed Jalen Hurts’ improvement on and off the field, as well as why he is so thrilled about his new coordinators, Kellen Moore and Vic Fangio.

He explained that after the season, they hire new instructors, take some time off, and then begin assessing everything from the previous year – which is where they are right now. Obviously, there was a drop-off near the end of the season, but the head coach stated that they are committed to fixing things.

Sirianni admitted that after some self-scouting, he felt as if he was leaning too heavily on one of their key beliefs and not enough on others. Those are the things he examines at the end of the year, and it is his responsibility to speak with each player and coach and identify ways to improve.

Sirianni was questioned if Jalen Hurts should be a more vocal leader in the upcoming season. He emphasized that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to leadership and that being yourself is the most essential aspect.

“Everyone must lead their own route, and Jalen [Hurts] possesses unique attributes that people will follow and desire to follow. And he must take the necessary actions to lead in that manner.”

The head coach also stated that this holds true for everyone of the team’s leaders, and that A.J. Brown and Darius Slay must also lead in their own ways.

Still, Sirianni stated that Hurts has done an excellent job at leading thus far in his career, and that he would continue to improve in this area as well.

He was later asked about Hurts’ improvement as a quarterback, and Sirianni noted that the quarterback had high points of success in 2022 and 2023. After the first 11 games, the Eagles saw a dip in performance, but it wasn’t due to Hurts or any other coach or player.

“Here’s what I know about Jalen [Hurts]:

whatever we see that he needs to work on, or whatever he sees that he needs to work on, he’ll improve because he gives it his all. And “That is also a form of leadership.”

On Kellen Moore’s scheme

“I recruited Kellen because I thought he was the greatest person for the job, and he has been successful in every place he has worked. I realize he has a young career, but he has been successful as both a player and a coach.

So, I admire the way he thinks about football, how he takes everything in and makes decisions based on it. So it’s been enjoyable getting to know him.

Obviously, I’ve always respected him from a distance, and it’s been a pleasure getting to know him and working through these issues together — to construct our offense for next season.”

On playing young guys

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman spoke to reporters shortly before Sirianni and conceded that in hindsight, certain young players may have played more during the 2023 season.

The head coach noted that his idea has always been to play the players that provide the team the best chance of winning each week. He added that he doesn’t mind using younger players since he owes it to the club and the fans to play the best player for the task.
