Dustin Hopkins and DE Myles Garrett win league awards

The Browns have won two AFC Player of the Week awards in the same week for the second time.

Browns of Cleveland, The National Football League announced on Wednesday that Dustin Hopkins had been named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week and DE Myles Garrett the AFC Defensive Player of the Week for the games played between October 19–23 (Week 7).

Hopkins converted all four field goals in the Browns’ 39-38 victory over the Indianapolis Colts, including three from 50 yards or more. When he made at least one field goal of fifty yards or more in five straight games, he broke the NFL record. His three field goals from 50 yards or more matched for the second-most by any player in NFL history during a single game. Hopkins made a career-long field goal that is tied for the second-longest in Browns history, going 58 yards. He included three PATs as well.

Additionally, Hopkins was selected as the Week 6 AFC Special Teams Player of the Week. He becomes one of just four kickers to win back-to-back since 2016 along with Daniel Carlson (2021), Justin Tucker (2019), Stephen Hauschka (2017), and Matt Prater (2016). With three AFC and two NFC titles under his belt, Hopkins is now in his fifth season as the Special Teams Player of the Week.

At Indianapolis, Garrett had nine stops, two sacks, two forced fumbles, one pass defensed, and one blocked field goal. His blocked field goal resulted in a field goal for the Browns, and both of his caused fumbles were recovered by Cleveland for 14 points, including one that was recovered in the end zone for a score. With his accomplishment, Garrett became the fourth player in Browns history to earn at least two sacks and two forced fumbles in a single game. Mark Word (2002) and John Thierry (1999) are the other two players who have achieved the feat.

Garrett, who has 82 career sacks and turns 28 years old later this season, surpassed Pro Football Hall of Famer Reggie White (80 sacks) for the most NFL sacks by a player prior to his 28th birthday.

Garrett hasn’t won Defensive Player of the Week since Week 3 of 2021, making this his third career honor. After LB Pepper Johnson (Defensive) and PR Eric Metcalf (Special Teams) in Week 8 of 1994, the Browns have now won two AFC Player of the Week awards in the same week.
