Done Deal: Seahawks Sign Former Rival in the Second Round Before the Week 13 Match

Prior to their NFC rivals’ game, the Seattle Seahawks have signed a former Dallas Cowboys second-round pick.

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Seahawks have signed cornerback Kelvin Joseph to the practice squad on Sunday, November 26.

Pelissero reports, “CB Kelvin Joseph, a former second-round pick of the Cowboys, has been signed by the Seahawks to the practice squad.” “On Thursday night, Dallas is visited by Seattle.”

Why Kelvin Joseph Was Traded by Cowboys

Joseph was originally taken in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft, and he is most renowned for his two-year stay with the Cowboys. Joseph was benched after starting just one game in the 2022 season, despite appearing in 26 games and three starts for Dallas in the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

After Joseph gave up two touchdowns in a 40-34 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 14, he was benched. Joseph would never get over being benched; for the rest of the season, he played in just two defensive snaps. Before the 2023 season officially began, Dallas would later deal the 24-year-old Joseph to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for cornerback Noah Igbinoghene.

The teenage defensive back was thrust into the starting lineup due to season-ending injuries to starting cornerbacks Jourdan Lewis and Anthony Brown, and team owner Jerry Jones pleaded with Joseph to “become a man” just before his start against the Jaguars.

Pro Football Focus reports that Joseph finished the previous season with a pitiful 49.2 defensive grade and a 44.1 coverage grade. The cornerback with the eighth-worst coverage grade out of those with at least 100 defensive snaps was this one.

Why Seahawks Are Signing Kelvin Joseph

Joseph played four games for the Dolphins, but he was primarily used on special teams. While Joseph played in 87 snaps, or 72% of the snaps on special teams, he only participated on 21 defensive snaps (or 8% of the defensive snaps).

Joseph was eventually released by the Dolphins earlier this month.

Sports Illustrated’s Colin K. Smith notes that Joseph’s signing might be more related to his knowledge with Dallas’ defensive scheme and his practice experience playing against quarterback Dak Prescott. When the Seahawks get ready to play the Cowboys on Thursday night, their familiarity and experience could offer them an advantage.

Given the timing of his addition, Smith notes that Joseph’s prior experience playing in the Cowboys’ defensive scheme and facing up against Dak Prescott and their offense on a daily basis makes coach Pete Carroll and Seattle’s staff prudent to pick Joseph’s brain.

Joseph hasn’t played much defense since December, so it’s unlikely that he’ll be a huge contributor to the Seahawks’ victory over the Cowboys. He will probably help the club get ready for a crucial NFC game against the 8-3 Cowboys, though.

Joseph’s career totals in three seasons include 30 games, three starts, 38 tackles, and one forced fumble.
