Key Running Back Bolts as Alabama Lands Bruising 23-TD Star

The Alabama Crimson Tide will most likely be without running back Roydell Williams in 2024, as he has entered the transfer portal. The good news is that standout running back Daniel Hill has committed to Alabama after months of speculation.


In 2023, Williams had 111 carries for 560 yards and 5 touchdowns for the Crimson Tide. It was Williams’ greatest season in Tuscaloosa during his four years there.

 

Hill is a four-star recruit and the No. 6 running back in the 2024 class, according to 247Sports. Other prominent contenders for the Meridian, Mississippi outstanding back included South Carolina, Mississippi State, and Auburn. With his 6-foot, 235-pound physique, Alabama’s newest running back has a powerful rushing style.

“Daniel Hill is the son of former Mississippi State defensive lineman Demetrius Hill,” according to On3.com. “In 110-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles, he has two Mississippi 6A track state titles.” Hill overcame injuries to both legs earlier in his high school career to become one of the nation’s top prospects and can currently squat 725 pounds.”

Hill had 277 carries for 2,064 yards and 23 touchdowns while attending Meridian High School. The playmaker also had 16 receptions for 240 yards and three touchdowns through the air.

Hill joins an Alabama program that has produced top NFL running backs in the past. The newest Crimson Tide member described why Alabama is enticing.

“They’ve been recruiting me for a while,” Hill told On3.com during an interview on January 4, 2024. “I’m not sure how many times I’ve been up there, but it’s a lot.”

“The legacy they have… not just with RB, but with the entire program plus the RB legacy, that’s something you have to think about as an RB going to Alabama and being coached by Nick Saban.” Robert Gillespie, Alabama’s running backs coach, is a fantastic coach.”

Roydell Stewart, Alabama Football Williams’ inclusion in the Transfer Portal expands Justice Haynes’ options.

In 2023, Play Williams served as the team’s backup running back behind Jase McClellan. The senior announced the transfer site news just days before Hill committed to Alabama. If McClellan joins the NFL draft, Williams’ absence could provide more opportunities for Justice Haynes, who impressed in the Rose Bowl.

“On Thursday, the growing belief was that Williams would return for a fifth season,” Kennington Smith III of The Athletic wrote in a January 5 piece titled “Alabama senior running back Roydell Williams enters transfer portal: Reports.” “Williams played his most important role at Alabama in 2023, finishing with 111 carries for 560 yards and five touchdowns, ranking second on the team in all three categories.” During the Rose Bowl loss to Michigan, he was limited to just one carry, which Saban ascribed to an ankle issue.
