Don Sweeney offers strong message on Bruins’ Linus Ullmark trade

On Monday evening, the Bruins made a franchise-altering trade.

Boston transferred goaltender Linus Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for forward Mark Kastelic, netminder Joonas Korpisalo, and this year’s 25th overall draft pick. Ullmark’s Black and Gold era came to an end with the deal, after he had spent three seasons in Boston after signing a four-year contract in July 2021.

Not long after the transaction was completed, Bruins general manager Don Sweeney issued a statement about it.

“The Boston Bruins would like to thank Linus, Moa, Harry and Lily for all of their contributions to the Bruins’ family,” according to a statement. “Linus is a Vezina-winning goaltender who was a standout on and off the ice. We wish Linus and his family continued success and happiness as he pursues his career in Ottawa.”

By trading Ullmark to Ottawa, Boston positioned Jeremy Swayman as the clear-cut No. 1 goaltender heading into the 2024-25 season. In other goalkeeper news, the Bruins announced Monday a one-year, two-way contract extension for Brandon Bussi, who is 26 years old.

With a first-round selection, Boston is set to make its first NHL draft pick since 2021 on Friday night.
