Diamondbacks Give Up 6-Run Advantage in Loss to Braves

Last season, the Diamondbacks’ late-game heroics earned them the nickname “Answerbacks,” a defining feature of their ascension to become one of baseball’s finest teams.

However, in the early part of 2024, their ability to recover has been lacking, as they have now found themselves on the losing end of such turnarounds.

In an attempt to level the series against Atlanta, the Diamondbacks scored six runs in the first inning, giving the impression that they were hungry for revenge after losing in extra innings twice in a row.

Despite the six-run lead, the D-backs lost their third straight game by a single run, as the Braves won 9-8.

Arizona’s offense managed only one runner in scoring position over the final four innings of the loss. Seven of their twelve hits came in the first inning, including five before an out was recorded.

The bullpen’s early-season struggles persisted, with Bryce Jarvis and Luis Frias each giving up two runs, laying the stage for Atlanta’s comeback in the seventh and eighth innings.

The Braves’ bats totaled 15 hits, led by the core lineup of Austin Riley, Matt Olson, Marcell Ozuna, and Michael Harris II, who combined for 10-18 and seven RBIs.

On the good side for Arizona, Ketel Marte has performed admirably this season. Marte hit his second consecutive leadoff home run on the second pitch of the game, traveling 461 feet.

The Diamondbacks will look to avoid a series sweep tomorrow morning at 10:35 am.
