Despite Bruno Guimaraes’ ‘very lucky’ red card escape against West Ham, the referee received accolades for his performance

Dermott Gallagher, a former referee, praised referee Peter Bankes for allowing the match between West Ham United and Newcastle United to flow and make for an exciting game for onlookers.

At the London Stadium, the Magpies rallied from behind to lead 2-1 after a brace from Alexander Isak erased Tomas Soucek’s first-half goal. However, a late equalizer from Mohammed Kudus ensured a sharing of the points.

One of the game’s major talking points was Bankes’ choice to spare Bruno Guimaraes a second caution after only 90 seconds for a late challenge. Gallagher stated that the Brazilian playmaker was extremely fortunate not to have received a second yellow for a foul on James Ward-Prowse.

When I consider Mateo Kovacic’s challenge from yesterday, it’s copy and paste, Gallagher said to Sky Sports. “He is very fortunate.”

If he receives a second yellow card there, none of us will fight since we are asking ourselves what else he expects? I feel fortunate for him.

Everything is involved; the referee attempted to let the game run. I saw this game live, and he contributed to making it entertaining to watch. Whether he thought that was a foul or not, and whether he didn’t stop a potential attack, it’s hard to say, other that you would expect him to go.

When a major incident as a referee occurs, you sit down as a group and declare that we need to get back to the fundamentals. We frequently take steps backwards in our efforts to protect ourselves, which causes us to act a little bit more than we ought to.

Secondly, I always say there is a hint, and Guimaraes is that clue, right? He seems to be asking, “What did I do?” I shouldn’t have allowed myself to get into that predicament.
