Derby County defender comments on a defeat at Sheffield United, which left everyone upset.

Derby County’s dreams of their first away point of the season were dashed by a brilliant free-kick from Gus Hamer, but Rams defender Eiran Cashin believes the club is not far from getting it right.

Cashin was part of the Rams’ strong defensive performance, which on another day would have resulted in a clean sheet. Reflecting on the game, he stated afterward, “It’s a tough one, and we’re disappointed overall. We limited them just a few opportunities and were disciplined because we knew how talented they were. We had a game plan and stuck to it.

“We felt like we were better on the ball at times, but in the second half, we gave them a little advantage. We were frustrated with the goal; it’s a monster strike, and perhaps if it hadn’t gone in, we could have had a different result. They may have been forced to continue, and we could have nicked one on the counter. We worked hard, but we may have worked too hard at times, and we ran out of gas in the end.

“We had a few chances in the first half, and we knew coming here was going to be difficult. We didn’t expect to have so many chances, but we knew we could hit them on the counter and cause some issues.

“The timing of the goal was not ideal for us because they had all the cards, sat in, and allowed us to step in. We occasionally caused our own problems, which is something we need to focus on and improve.”

The game was Paul Warne’s 400th game in charge, and it was a Championship defeat that will not be remembered as a poor performance, even if the outcome was not what the manager had intended for.

Cashin believes there were positive takeaways, saying, “To be fair, I don’t think we gave up. Toward the end, it grew a little scrappy, and we became a little loose and open, but that was only due to our desire to win and receive something. It wasn’t pretty at times, so we can learn from that, but our aims, battle, and desire to win are clear to everyone.

“We did not give up, and we played well in the first half. We stayed in shape, were disciplined, and generated the occasional opportunity. There were a lot of positives to take away from this one, so that’s what we can focus on for next week.”
