Defensive tackle position with the Indianapolis Colts is being considered by Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys remain one of the most intriguing teams to follow as the NFL’s free agency period approaches.

Knowing that the team needs reinforcements if it is to make a deep playoff run, but appearing unwilling to invest heavily in the free agent market, combined with the contract situations of Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb, not to mention Tyron Smith potentially leaving, the Cowboys are difficult to read right now.

The Cowboys need to improve on defense, especially along the defensive line and at linebacker. Stopping the run was Dallas’ weakness in 2023, and it ultimately cost them a third consecutive postseason appearance.

PFF has put together a lovely little project in which they select a “perfect” free agent for each team, and when it comes to Dallas, defensive line star Grover Stewart from the Indianapolis Colts joins The Star.

Dallas has some decisions to make on Dak Prescott and Michael Gallup before they can begin to look externally for reinforcements,” according to PFF. With multiple needs on both sides of the ball, it will be intriguing to see where the Cowboys prioritize. One should focus on upgrading a run defense that has frequently failed in critical situations. Grover Stewart of Indianapolis should be on the Cowboys’ radar after posting a career-high run-defense rating of 77.3 in 2023.

We know there is no such thing as perfection, but Stewart might be a valuable addition to Mike Zimmer’s defense.

Stewart signed a three-year, $30.1 million contract with the Colts in 2020, and we expect him to look for something comparable, if not better, during this free agency period.

Stewart is a defensive line playmaker who specializes at run defense. His 6-4, 314-pound stature allows him to plug and fill running lanes, potentially leading to Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence clearing up. Last season, a player from that statue was noticeably absent.

It is unclear whether Dallas will participate in free agency (history suggests not), and as PFF points out, more serious matters, including as Dak Prescott’s deal, must be addressed first.

However, if the Cowboys truly want to make it to the NFC Championship game in 2024, they can’t sit back and bargain in free agency.

Do whatever it takes to get the players the team badly needs, and Grover Stewart has the potential to help solve one of the most serious concerns plaguing Dallas’ defenses for years.
