Derby County has been urged to sign Curtis Nelson to a new deal at Pride Park.

The 31-year-old defender has played an important role in the Rams’ successful return to the Championship under Paul Warne. He has started all of their first nine games of the season, guiding them to four victories and a 12th-place finish on the table.

Nelson has not only been a rock at the defense, keeping four clean sheets, but he has also scored twice, including the opener in a 2-0 win over QPR last time out. And, with his contract with the club set to expire at the end of the season, Warne and Derby owner David Clowes have been pushed to offer him a new deal.

Former footballer turned pundit Carlton Palmer told Football League World: “I would have thought that giving Curtis Nelson a new contract would be a top priority for Paul Warne and the Derby County hierarchy.”

“He’s perhaps Derby County’s finest player this season, and Paul Warne leads a very strong back four. They had the greatest defensive record when they were promoted last season, and they’ve continued to play well defensively this season, with Curtis Nelson playing a major role.

“I’m sure Derby County will look to sign him to a contract soon. You don’t want disturbances, and Derby County is 12th in the table after a strong start to the season following their promotion from League One.

“It’s critical that they bind him down to a new deal, and I’m sure Paul Warne and David Clowes will address it.

“Without a shadow of a doubt they won’t be allowing him to leave in the January transfer window, he’s too important to the cause and I think in the coming months we’ll see him sign a new deal.”
