Darren Ferguson spoke after his Peterborough United side fell to Birmingham City at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park.

After watching his Peterborough United become Birmingham City’s newest League One victims, Darren Ferguson believes relegation is the best thing that could happen’ to them.

Blues rallied from two goals behind to upset the Posh 3-2 at St Andrew’s on Saturday, surpassing Wrexham at the top of the table. Blues drew level thanks to goals from Willum Willumsson and Oscar Wallin (OG), before skipper Krystian Bielik scored in the 66th minute to win.

Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson stated: “I said before the game, and I meant it, that I believe relegation has been the best thing to happen to this club.” It’s galvanized everyone; they’ve hired a terrific coach, the place is flying, and they’re going to give it their all to get out of the league for the first time. Birmingham has had the best possible outcome.”

Ferguson also used his post-match press conference to counter claims that his team wasted time. The home crowd were dissatisfied with the amount of time Peterborough goalkeeper Jed Steer spent on goal kicks, and Blues manager Chris Davies stated that his yellow card was due in part to displeasure with the length of time it took for play to restart.

Ferguson continued, “You get here, and within three minutes, they want people booked for time-wasting! It’s a little much, but we aren’t wasting time. But that is the mood you will encounter here. We dealt with them satisfactorily. The disappointment is that you go two-nil up yet lose the game.

“We wanted to come here and confront them. We wanted to take the initiative if possible.

“We won’t play this team every week. They’ve done an excellent job of recruiting and now have some fantastic players at this level. But we didn’t want to sit here and watch them win the game easily.”
