Cubs are said to have signed an ex-Yankees pitcher after strong 2023 Season

One former Yankees player appears to have found a new home with the Cubs.

The Chicago Cubs appear to be very busy right now.

Chicago has made headlines this offseason with signing manager Craig Counsell to a massive contract. Since then, the Cubs have been connected to a number of free-agent players, but have yet to make a significant move.

Aside from Counsell, the Cubs are still seeking for their first major splash of the offseason, but they reportedly made a depth move on Tuesday. According to a post on the 31-year-old’s Instagram page, Chicago has signed former New York Yankees pitcher Colten Brewer.

“Excited to be joining the Cubs for the 2024 season,” Brewer stated in a statement. “I’m grateful for every moment I get to play this game.” I can’t wait to see you guys in Arizona for Spring Training!”

Brewer has spent two seasons in the Yankees organization, the most recent in 2023. He pitched in 15 games for the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, recording a 1.35 ERA in 20 innings.

Last season, he played in three games for the New York Yankees and allowed four earned runs in 8 1/3 innings of work. Brewer’s tenure with the Yankees last season was his first in the big leagues since 2021, when he played for the Boston Red Sox. From 2019 to 2021, he was a member of the Boston Bruins.

It is unknown what function Brewer will have inside the Cubs organization. Brewer did not specify if he signed a major league or lower league contract. Whether or whether he signs a major league contract, it wouldn’t be unexpected to see him in the big leagues at some time next year.
