Cowboys To Make A Major Trade Move With Seahawks For QB

According to Dallas Cowboys rumors, Dak Prescott looks to be the team’s franchise quarterback.

In 2023, the Seattle Seahawks’ prospects are significantly less certain due to Geno Smith’s patchy performance.

Prescott has solidified his place as the starting quarterback for the Cowboys and is a contender for NFL MVP. Dallas still needs to make a decision regarding the role’s future. Trey Lance, Cooper Rush, and Prescott are all under contract through 2024.

Prescott’s cap hit for the upcoming season is expected to be a whopping $59.4 million. The Cowboys front office is under pressure to sign the signal-caller to an extension as a result of this.

As part of a four-year, $34 million rookie contract, Lance will have a $5.3 million cap hit in 2024. Rush is more reasonably priced, with a $2.8 million cap hit in the upcoming season as part of a $5 million, two-year contract.

These elements, along with the unpredictability in Seattle, have led Connor Livesay of the 33rd Team to speculate that Lance’s two teams might be potential trade partners. Let’s look at the reasons why a trade might benefit both sides.

Cowboys Rumors: Dallas May Be Able to Net a Nice Return in a Trey Lance Trade

Given that the quarterback is less than three years removed from being the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft, Lance probably still has some clout in the NFL. To acquire Lance as their third quarterback going into the season, the Cowboys traded a fourth-round pick to the 49ers. The NFL’s quarterback situation is not great because many teams are struggling with injuries and uncertainty.

Lance still has trade value even though he hasn’t taken a snap for Dallas. The Seahawks, Saints, and Vikings are rumored to be interested parties in trading for Lance. Dallas enjoys the luxury of having Rush on the team, who in 2024 might serve as Prescott’s backup.

“According to Spotrac, Rush is under contract for just $2.87 million against the cap, so Dallas could slide Lance into the QB2 role next season,” Livesay wrote in a feature titled “Surprising NFL Players Who Could Be Traded This Offseason” on December 8, 2023. “Should the Cowboys continue to use Rush at quarterback, they may begin contacting teams in need of quarterbacks who were not able to select Jayden Daniels, Caleb Williams, or Drake Maye in the 2024 NFL Draft.

“The Cowboys may receive a better return for Lance than they did from teams like the Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints, or Seattle Seahawks, but Lance might raise the bar for Dallas’ QB2 spot. Some teams might consider Lance a good option if they lose out on the best passers in the draft.

Seahawks Rumors: Seattle Can Move on From Geno Smith in 2024

Smith was indeed signed by Seattle in the offseason to a three-year, $75 million contract. The Seahawks are on a three-game losing streak going into Week 14, and Smith has already thrown nine interceptions this season. Many Seahawks rumors concerning Smith’s future have been sparked by this.

Seattle might be able to maintain Smith on the team while reaching a compromise if they sign Lance. With the projected No. 15 pick in the upcoming draft, the Seahawks stand to lose out on several of the best quarterback prospects.

Smith could be gone from Seattle as early as 2024, but doing so would come with a substantial $17.4 million dead cap hit. Purchasing Lance would be a reasonably inexpensive way to give Smith competition.

Even so, Lance has only appeared in eight NFL games, four of which were starts. Compared to current backup quarterback Drew Lock, the 6-foot-4, 226-pound quarterback has far more upside. Both the Seahawks and the Cowboys must make decisions at the position that could lead to a trade.

Whatever happens, there will inevitably be Cowboys rumors regarding the team’s plans for Lance and Rush.
