Courtland Sutton’s Instagram post appears to be a farewell to Broncos

Is this Courtland Sutton’s final game with the Denver Broncos?

On Friday, the 28-year-old former Pro Bowl wide receiver posted on Instagram with a caption that appeared to be a chapter-ending message.

“Broncos territory” “I’m grateful to have completed another season here in Denver,” Sutton wrote. “Unfortunately, we were unable to achieve our primary goal. I’m still thankful to all of my teammates and support personnel for riding with me all season. I know that everything happens for a purpose, and I trust my God’s plans above everything else, even whatever comes next for me. Just know that every time I stepped onto that field, I gave everything I had to this team and organization! “All Love 14”

Sutton had a career-high ten touchdown receptions in 2023. The 6-foot-4 SMU product was one of the NFL’s finest red zone targets and a bright spot in a drab Broncos offense.

Sutton has spent his whole six-year career in Denver after being picked in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He’s been on a rollercoaster at Mile High, but it always ends in defeat. Unfortunately for Sutton, he’s never been able to replicate his second-season Pro Bowl stats, when he produced his lone 1,000-yard-plus season. He sustained a catastrophic knee injury in 2020 and has since recovered to become a very productive player.

Sutton’s four-year, $60 million contract expires in two years. At a dead cap value of $7.6 million, one would think Denver wouldn’t need to cut him, albeit he did appear on a possible cut list earlier in the day. Maybe Payton can get a selection in exchange for the extremely good player. Only Mike Evans, Tyreek Hill, and CeeDee Lamb had more touchdown receptions this year than Sutton.

The Broncos have a major decision on Russell Wilson this offseason, one appears to have already been made: release him and face a $80 million dead cap hit. Denver also has a first-round pick for the first time since 2021, as well as Sean Payton already in place to build a roster to his liking. Denver is likely to have an active offseason. It’s not surprising that Sutton, who has never had a winning season in orange and blue, wants gone, or that the Broncos want to start over.
