Confirmed: Former Bruins Goalie Officially Quit The Game

For the previous three seasons, the Bruins have appreciated Linus Ullmark’s post-victory embrace with Jeremy Swayman on the ice.

However, with Ullmark’s departure from Boston, this cherished custom is unlikely to continue in Ottawa.

Linus Ullmark has stated unequivocally that he will not introduce the hug custom to Ottawa because it is a special gesture shared by him and Swayman.

Linus Ullmark was questioned at his first media appearance with the Senators on Wednesday about his intentions to continue his normal practice with his new goaltender partner, Anton Forsberg.

“I’m not going to bring it to Ottawa,” Ullmark said. “The goalie hug that we had in Boston, that’s for me and Sway only and that’s out of respect for what we had and what we built through our years together and the respect and love and admiration that I have for him.

“I’m not gonna say we’re gonna come up with something new or anything like that. There’s always been the celebrations after winning games. So, we’ll see what happens. Who knows? Maybe there’ll be a dab or something. But I’m not gonna try too hard to come up with a new thing or something like that. I’m just gonna have to let it play out naturally.”

Ullmark’s NHL career with Boston saw him develop into one of the league’s best goaltenders. His exceptional abilities earned him the prestigious Vezina Trophy for the 2022–2023 season. It also cemented his place as the top netminder. However, this is Swayman’s net. This resulted in Ullmark’s contract discussions looming. His tenure with the team was clearly coming to an end.

Ullmarks Arrival in Ottawa

On Monday, Boston decided to trade Ullmark to the Senators. In exchange, the Bruins received the 25th pick in the 2024 NHL draft. It also included Mark Kastelic, a promising attacker, and Joonas Korpisalo, the goaltender.

Ullmark’s arrival as the Senators’ goaltender will provide a lift. However, it is unclear whether he plans to stay in Ottawa for the long run.

Ullmark is due to become a free agency next summer, thus his choice not to agree to a contract extension with Ottawa during Monday’s transaction may have influenced Boston’s overall return from the Senators. Ullmark appears to have other interests at the moment, which he is focused on before returning to contract negotiations with the Senators.

Gook Luck Ullmark!

The Boston faithful are sincerely rooting for Ullmark’s success, and while they are saddened to say goodbye to the legend, they are relieved that the embrace will stay in Boston rather than finding a new home with another team.
