Anthony Richardson, the Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback, could be in for an explosive breakout season.

The Indianapolis Colts have a lot of promise, potential, and talent on their roster heading into the 2019 NFL season. While there are veterans like as defensive end DeForest Buckner, cornerback Kenny Moore II, wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr., and running back Jonathan Taylor, the team is also seeing an infusion of younger players who have the potential to make a significant impact. Players like cornerback JuJu Brents, defensive end Laiatu Latu, and safety Nick Cross will want to make significant progress in their development to help Indy’s club prosper. However, the majority of attention will be focused on quarterback Anthony Richardson’s performance in his second NFL season.

CBS Sports published an article by analyst Josh Edwards analyzing the top players still on rookie contracts who can make a significant leap forward in 2024. When it comes to judging Richardson in the QB’s entry, Edwards is direct.

Richardson had flashes of brilliance but was largely up and down prior to his injury. The reason for confidence stems from head coach Shane Steichen’s proficiency as an offensive play-caller, as well as the overall health of the offensive line and skill groups. Those elements alone should give Richardson a fighting chance to take a big leap forward in Year 2.

Richardson got a limited amount of experience during his debut season. The former Florida Gator played four games, totaling 50 completions for 577 throwing yards and three touchdowns. He also shown excellent rushing ability, with 25 carries for 136 yards and four more scores. Another thing that jumped out was Richardson’s ability to operate in the pocket and avoid pass rushers.

Richardson also demonstrated the ability to keep his eyes downfield and on the lookout for viable receivers while running and under pressure. In terms of inaccuracy, Richardson fell short of 60% (59.5); this will remain a focus of progress for the young field general. However, while these traits and short performances are excellent, they are meaningless if Richardson is unable to play due to injuries. While it would be incorrect to say he was a wreckless runner in 2023, he wasn’t the most cognizant of his body in space either.

When all is said and done, Richardson poses one of the league’s most difficult tasks for defensive coordinators. He’s enormous, swift, can throw while standing or running, and works with other weapons that are made even more dangerous by his presence. Taylor now poses a greater threat to defenders than normal, and Pittman can find more ways to get open given Richardson’s movement. Add Shane Steichen’s expertise in instructing quarterbacks and developing plays, and Richardson’s 2024 might be a breakout year. All that is required is for him to be healthy enough to receive a shot.
