Colts tight end’s hamstrings appear entirely recovered

After a terrible 2023 season that never happened due to nagging hamstring issues, Colts tight end Jelani Woods looks to be fully recovered after recent workouts.

After suffering hamstring issues that interrupted his 2023 season before it even began, Indianapolis Colts tight end Jelani Woods appears to have fully recovered, according to his personal Instagram account (via The IndyStar’s Nate Atkins).

After demonstrating early promise during his rookie season, when he caught 25 receptions for 312 receiving yards and three touchdown receptions, Woods was placed on injured reserve in late August of this year after worsening a hamstring issue in training camp.

While mending that problematic hamstring throughout the season, Woods experienced a setback with his other hamstring and was never activated from injured reserve.

Woods, at 6’7,” 253 pounds (and having recently run a 4.61 forty at the 2022 NFL Combine), presents a rare sheer size-speed combo (with deceiving burners) when his hamstrings are fully recovered. This past season, the Colts missed his spectacular athleticism, ability to stretch the seam on occasion, and role as a big-bodied red zone target.

It’s not the first time this early offseason that Woods has shown off his tough exercise regimen, superior athleticism, and the fact that he looks totally recovered—he previously posted this excellent workout in early March (via The Athletic’s James Boyd):

If fully healthy, Woods promises to be an important piece of the Colts’ tight end puzzle next season—especially if Indianapolis decides to ‘run it back’ with the present positional room, give or take.

While there was some early pre-draft buzz linking prized Georgia tight end Brock Bowers to the Colts with the 15th overall pick in the first round of this year’s 2024 NFL Draft, it’s easy to forget that Indianapolis already has a physical freak at the position—-and next year will be only his second NFL season.

The point is, don’t underestimate Jelani Woods just yet—especially if his recent strenuous workouts are any indication of where he’s physically right now.
