A troubled Colts defense could get a key starter back this week.

Julian Blackmon, Indianapolis’ strong safety, is expected to practice on Wednesday after missing the Green Bay game due to a shoulder issue.

Blackmon recorded 13 tackles in the season opener.

“He will practice today,” Indianapolis’ head coach Shane Steichen stated.

Indianapolis substituted starting free safety Nick Cross for Blackmon against the Packers, and Cross led the Colts with 15 tackles. Cross currently leads the NFL with 29 tackles after two weeks, five more than any other player.

Blackmon made 13 tackles in the season opener.

The status of first-round pick Laiatu Latu is less certain. Latu suffered a hip injury in the fourth quarter against the Packers, knocking him out for the rest of the game.

“He won’t practice today,” Steichen stated. “But we’ll take it day by day.”

As a precaution, the Colts have historically kept players with injury concerns out of games on Wednesday. If those guys miss practice on Thursday and Friday, it is frequently a stronger predictor of whether or not they will play.
