Colts Sign Ex-Jets WR to Active Roster

The Indianapolis Colts continue to bolster their wide receiver corps as they pursue one of the league’s most surprising playoff berths.

The Indianapolis Colts have promoted veteran wide receiver D.J. Montgomery from the practice squad to the active roster for Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

According to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport, “the #Colts are signing WR DJ Montgomery from the practice squad to their active roster, per agents @davidcanter and @NessMugrabi.”

The Colts later made the roster change official. Montgomery’s promotion was announced alongside the activation of defensive tackle Grover Stewart from the Commissioner’s Exempt list and the waiver of wide receiver Juwann Winfree.

Following the news of Jonathan Taylor’s thumb surgery, the Colts also promoted running back Tyler Goodson from the practice squad to the active roster. Montgomery’s addition makes sense for the Colts’ wide receiver depth given the team’s current situation.

The Colts offense will look for any type of help or looks for the final regular season push after putting together their fourth straight win to get to 7-5 and the current sixth playoff spot in the AFC.

Montgomery’s production has been minimal in his brief NFL career, which began in 2021 with the New York Jets, catching three passes on six targets for 36 yards and two first downs. However, he hasn’t had much time on the field to show off his abilities.

Even though Michael Pittman Jr., Josh Downs, and Alec Pierce unquestionably lead the Colts’ receiving corps, it’s critical to keep speed and experience on the depth chart. Montgomery can also continue to give the Colts’ defense good looks in practice as they prepare for the season’s final two games.

Montgomery brings a veteran presence to the Colts’ underappreciated receiving corps, which appears to be hitting its stride at the right time. We’ll see if Indy can keep the momentum going against the 6-6 Bengals on Sunday.
