Colts’ RB to replace Saquon Barkley

The New York Giants should prioritize avoiding another Saquon Barkley saga at 2024 NFL free agency.

The greatest option is to let the two-time Pro Bowl RB test the market and replace him with Indianapolis Colts’ Zack Moss.

The Athletic’s Dan Duggan proposed this idea. According to him, “if Barkley gets a strong offer on the market, the Giants should shake his hand and thank him for six years of exemplary service.”

According to Duggan, if Barkley leaves, the team may consider signing a low-cost veteran, like as Zack Moss (projected two-year, $7.5 million contract by PFF), in a competitive free-agent market, and drafting a back on Day 3.

Even if Moss isn’t as dynamic or diverse as Barkley, this is an excellent suggestion. Moss did play for Giants head coach Brian Daboll during his two seasons with the Buffalo Bills.

Daboll recognizes Moss as a tough and resourceful veteran. Despite Colts All-Pro Jonathan Taylor’s injury last season, the 26-year-old demonstrated his ability to handle a bigger workload.

Zack Moss Would Be Functional Starter for Giants

Moss has eight starts and averaged 13.1 rushing attempts per game for the 9-8 Colts. It was the 26-year-old’s first week in a starting role, yet Moss averaged 4.3 yards per carry.

In Week 3, he had a terrific performance against the Baltimore Ravens, gaining 122 yards. Moss demonstrated patience and wisdom by bouncing a run off tackle for a large gain, as highlighted by Chris Shepherd of SB Nation’s Stampede Blue.

Moss performed even better two weeks later, rushing for 165 yards on 23 carries against the Tennessee Titans. He converted two of his carries into scores.

The 2020 NFL draft third-round pick demonstrated breakaway speed with the first of his 56-yard scores.

Moss excels in the running game, but he’s also an effective receiver and pass-protector. In 2023, he made a career-high 37 receptions, 10 of which resulted in first downs, according to Pro Football Reference.

Moss’ finest catch of the season led to a touchdown against the Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium.

Daboll could trust on Moss to swiftly learn the Giants’ scheme. Moss’ all-around game would make him a strong supporter for quarterback Daniel Jones, though he may not be the same 30-carry workhorse as Barkley.

Offering Moss a contract would also be a less expensive option than re-signing Barkley.

Saquon Barkley Payday Too Much for Giants

Barkley’s predicted market value of $9.9 million per year for three years is certainly too high for the Giants. The franchise will have $26,012,449 to deal with within the salary cap.

It’s a respectable figure, but the Giants have more pressing needs than running backs. Needs include strengthening the offensive line, retooling the secondary, and adding a big talent at wide out.
Fixing these problems might make a two-year contract worth $4.6 million more tempting. That is what it could take to obtain Moss.

This deal would be a cheap compromise to suit both the Giants and Barkley. The latter wants to get paid and is already open to testing the market and letting the Giants match any offers if they so desire.
