Colts NFL draft pick believed GM’s phone call was fake

Jonah Laulu believed he was being punked.

The top Oklahoma defensive tackle was eventually drafted after a long wait, but he couldn’t believe it.

Chris Ballard, general manager of the Indianapolis Colts, called Laulu and questioned the truth of the situation.

“Welcome to Indianapolis, man,” Ballard remarked on the phone. “We’re drafting you right here.”

Laulu said, “That’s not a prank call, is it?”

Ballard emphasized, “It’s not a prank call, I promise you,” and laughed loudly throughout the chat.

Laulu was selected in the seventh round, No. 234 overall, as the Colts’ final pick of the week.

Laulu spent the last two seasons at Oklahoma.

This past year, he recorded three tackles for loss and one sack from the interior defensive line while playing for the Sooners, who finished the season ranked 15th in the AP poll.

In 2022, Laulu put up 5.5 tackles for loss while recording 1.5 sacks and a 26-yard interception return.

Before transferring to Oklahoma, Laulu originally played at Hawaii from 2018-2021.

He had 34 tackles, eight tackles for loss and four sacks, before leaving for Oklahoma prior to the 2022 season.
