Colts’ Most Rated Rookie for 2023 Revealed

Pro Football Focus picked a significant defender as the Indianapolis Colts’ most improved player in 2023.

In 2023, the Indianapolis Colts faced fresh challenges on numerous fronts. Much of it was due to a disastrous 2022 season in which coaches, players, and front-office members were unhappy and the team performed poorly, resulting in a disappointing 4-12-1 record.

Indy received the fourth overall pick and quarterback Anthony Richardson, but Shane Steichen’s first season as head coach has raised issues.

Questions arose about veteran cornerback Kenny Moore II’s comeback and whether his finest days were behind him. Moore, who has one year left on his four-year, $33.3 million contract, sparked trade rumors.

Moore ultimately decided to stay with Indianapolis for the final season of his contract.

Moore’s choice to stick there paid off, as he thrived in his second season under Gus Bradley’s scheme and helped lead one of the NFL’s youngest secondary units.

The seven-year pro had one of his greatest years to date, and Pro Football Focus rated him the Colts’ most-improved player in 2023.

Moore may be 30 years old, with some believing he is on the downswing of his career, but he responded to any potential critics in style. His 79.3 coverage grade and 78.1 overall grade were both career highs.

Moore’s overall defensive grade in 2022 was compared to 2023 by PFF. The contrast is night and day.

Moore concluded 2022 with an overall defensive grade of 55.7, but he improved significantly to 77.4 for the 2023 season.

This performance ranked fourth overall on the defensive roster, trailing only DeForest Buckner (81.8) and Samson Ebukam (84.4).

Moore also finished the season with an impressive 93 tackles (8 for loss), 1.5 sacks, 6 passes defended, 3 interceptions, and 2 defensive touchdowns.

Moore is now a free agent following a resurgent year, despite expectations that he would have found a new suitor by now.

Will the Colts sign Moore to a new contract given the youthful talent in their secondary, including JuJu Brents, Jaylon Jones, and Dallas Flowers?

He’ll be one of many players the Colts must decide whether to keep or release during the 2024 offseason.
