Colts Expected to Land Super Bowl Champion Cornerback

The Indianapolis Colts may lose cornerback Kenny Moore II this offseason.

However, Pro Football Network’s Dallas Robinson indicated the Colts as a potential destination for a different cornerback in NFL free agency. Robinson anticipated that the Colts would recruit veteran defensive back Kendall Fuller.

“Although the Colts have historically been reticent to actively participate in free agency, this might be the time for GM Chris Ballard to make a move,” Robinson wrote in an email. “Indianapolis has the sixth-largest cap space in the NFL, with Anthony Richardson on a rookie quarterback contract and obvious needs on its depth chart.

“Adding a seasoned cornerback to supplement a young bunch of defensive backs could be the right move, and Kendall Fuller appears to be a good match for Indianapolis.

Last season, no defense played more Cover 3 than Gus Bradley’s Colts, and Fuller’s passer rating allowed was over 50 points higher in zone coverage than man.

Fuller was drafted in the third round by the Washington Redskins in 2016. He has spent his entire career with the Redskins and the Kansas City Chiefs. He helped the Chiefs win their first Super Bowl in 2019 alongside Patrick Mahomes. Since then, Fuller has returned to Washington to become a starter with the Commanders.

Fuller has started 93 events in his career. In 117 games, he has 486 combined tackles, including 14 for loss. He’s also tallied 75 pass defenses and 16 interceptions.

Last season, he recorded 79 combined tackles, 9 pass defenses, and 2 interceptions in 15 games. This offseason, Spotrac projected Fuller’s market worth to be around $42.3 million on a three-year contract.

Fuller’s average annual compensation would be $14.1 million under this agreement. According to Spotrac, the Colts have over $66 million in cap space.

In addition to Moore, veteran cornerback Tony Brown is a free agent with the Colts. Indianapolis’ roster for next season lacks a cornerback over the age of 24 who has played at least 26% of the team’s defensive snaps.

Signing Fuller would provide the Colts more depth and crucial veteran experience at cornerback.
