Co-owner of Burnley JJ Watt expresses his annoyance as pressure on Vincent Kompany grows

Owner JJ Watt has expressed his dissatisfaction with Burnley’s dismal start to the season and raised concerns about their defense, which might put a lot of pressure on Vincent Kompany.

JJ Watt, the owner of Burnley and a former NFL player, has pushed the squad to “bounce back” following a terrible start to the Premier League season.

Throughout the season, Burnley has only collected four points, winning one and losing eight of their ten league games. They are now 19th in the Premier League and the only team in the division without a win is Sheffield United, who have accrued fewer points than them.

After making an impression with Burnley last season—when they won the Championship with 101 points—manager Vincent Kompany was linked to the Tottenham position this summer. Burnley’s newfound success in the Premier League has been attributed to Kompany’s football style, which Watt is eager for to come together quickly.

Watt discussed Burnley’s dismal season opening performance when he appeared as a guest on The Pat McAfee Show. The Clarets defeated Luton Town 2-1 on the road on October 3 to record their first and only victory of the season. However, they fell short in their next three games against Chelsea, Brentford, and Bournemouth. “That was a frustrating experience, no doubt about it. The game against Brentford, I was frustrated with that one,” Watt explained.

“But this one, we went up 1-0 and they put some pressure on and we didn’t handle it very well.” Prior to Burnley’s EFL Cup Round of 16 matchup with Everton on Wednesday, Watt expressed his desire for the midweek match to serve as a launching pad for their future achievements. “We have a match in a couple of hours against Everton, so I’m really hoping we have a bounce back and we show some resiliency and resolve here.” Rather, Burnley suffered a crushing 3-0 loss and lost the Carabao Cup.

“With 28 games remaining, we have plenty of time remaining after 10 games. We’re going to be OK because we’re assembling our team, developing our chemistry, and knowing the playing style that our coach wants us to play,” Watt continued. “He runs a very specific style of play and it takes guys a while to understand exactly what he’s asking and execute it.” Despite having the second-worst defense in the Premier League, Burnley has only scored eight goals, making it difficult for them to score.

As an NFL defensive standout, Watt is especially frustrated with Burnley’s struggle to maintain a clean sheet. “The defence, man, we’ve got to step it up on the defensive side,” Watt said. In the Premier League, Burnley was joined by Sheffield United and Luton, the latter making their divisional debut. Since all three of the teams are presently in the relegation zone, the promoted teams may make an immediate return to the Championship.

The other suffering team is Bournemouth, who defeated Burnley 2-1 in their most recent Premier League match. The Cherries are involved in the early relegation battle and are the only Premier League team other than the newly promoted teams to have not yet reached the 10-point milestone.
