Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has revealed a new signing, which has yet to be officially announced.

Blues are poised to complete the acquisition of Brighton & Hove Albion ace Marc Leonard on Thursday, following agreements between the two teams and the player.

Leonard has already passed his Birmingham physical and was present when Chris Davies’ side defeated Rangers 2-1 in a pre-season friendly at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park.

Blues put on an excellent performance, which Leonard will most likely have enjoyed from the stands. It is believed the former Scotland Under-21 international will sign for a cost of about £500,000 plus add-ons.

“That one is pretty close,” Davies confessed after the match on Wednesday. “That will be our eighth signing of the transfer window; we have a large number of players already, but we need more. It is critical that we have depth for the games we will be playing, which might be as many as 60.

“That’s another talented player. It all starts with the character: are they hardworking and able to fit into that ethos? Is he good on the ball? Is he physical enough? He checks all the criteria. He’s youthful and eager to grow; he matches the profile of someone on the rise.”

Birmingham Landing Leonard’s departure is a major setback for Coventry City, Preston North End, Plymouth Argyle, and Wrexham, as many Championship and League One clubs were interested in signing him.

The 22-year-old was immensely dependable for a Northampton side that comfortably avoided relegation from League One despite being heavily touted for the drop last season.

Leonard, who scored five goals and assisted six last season, could play in a number of central midfield areas, giving Davies plenty of options. Not missing a single league minute last season was really commendable, demonstrating his dependability and consistency.

Despite being with Brighton since 2018, Leonard has only appeared twice for the senior team. He did, however, appear on 81 occasions at the youth level, scoring six goals and providing 11 assists. It’s anticipated that he can continue his development with Birmingham.
