Birmingham City saw their starting full back limp out of their 2-1 victory over Wigan Athletic at St Andrew’s @Knighthead Park.

Birmingham City are concerned about Ethan Laird’s fitness after the right defender limped out of Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Wigan Athletic.

The 23-year-old, who suffered injury problems last season, has played every game this season but is now a doubt for Tuesday night’s Bristol Street Motors Trophy opener against Walsall.

Laird was replaced by Alfons Sampsted after he was knocked down early in the second half at St Andrew’s, with the Blues leading 1-0 before being pegged back and requiring a Scott Wright winner late on.

If Laird is out for an extended period of time, the Icelander, who is on loan from Dutch club Twente, is the obvious alternative. Taylor Gardner-Hickman also performed the job for West Brom.

Manager Chris Davies revealed: “Ethan received a kick on his ankle, which is essentially a knock on his ankle. I just peeked at him in the treatment room with the physio, and yes, it is a sore one. However, without knowing too many facts, we don’t know how long he’s out. “We’ll see how he does tomorrow.”

The Blues are already without Keshi Anderson, who suffered an injury in the game against Fulham on Tuesday night. Davies suggested at Friday’s news conference that the winger could miss ‘a few weeks’ and that the injury was ‘nothing severe’.

Dion Sanderson is also ‘a few weeks’ out after suffering a foot injury before the Wycombe game. Sanderson is presently training with Lee Buchanan and Alfie Chang on the fitness team.

Buchanan has been plagued by a calf issue in preseason, while Chang is on the mend after a knee ligament problem.
