Chip Kelly, the new Ohio State Buckeyes offensive coordinator, isn’t afraid to share. On Saturday, Kelly was asked how much he planned to vary from prior Buckeyes football approaches.

Kelly said that he intended to use every member of Ohio State’s staff, including head coach Ryan Day, to create the finest offensive possible. “It’s got to be a total collaborative effort,” he remarked.

“It is not my offense, Ryan’s offense, Brian Hartline’s offense, or Justin Frye’s offense. This is Ohio State’s offense. Put all of those minds together, and maybe we’ll come up with a really excellent strategy.”

Kelly has already spoken with the majority of the offensive staff, which includes Hartline, running backs coach Tony Alford, and tight ends coach Keenan Bailey.

They will all contribute to the Buckeyes’ offensive identity. “Everybody has great thoughts and processes of how they do things,” he remarked.

“So far, I’ve spent time on offense with Brian Hartline, Tony and Keenan Bailey, and the rest of the offensive staff. There are a lot of incredibly smart people in that room, which is a plus for us.

Kelly was appointed as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator following the departure of Bill O’Brien, who had only been there for a few weeks before accepting the head coaching position at Boston College.

Kelly led UCLA to the highest rushing yards per game in the Pac-12 Conference the previous two seasons (237.2 yards in 2022 and 197.9 yards in 2023). Only time will tell how Kelly’s running game will fare against Ohio State’s outstanding rushers TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins.
