Chiefs WR’s Girlfriend Sends 5-Word Message After Shocking Return

In the Kansas City Chiefs’ quest for a third Super Bowl title, improving the wide receivers’ room was a primary objective.

After releasing Marquez Valdes-Scantling, it appeared the Chiefs had moved on from veteran Mecole Hardman.

However, during Phase 3 of organized team activities, NFL insider Jordan Schultz announced that Kansas City would re-sign Hardman on Thursday, June 6. The announcement came as a surprise given the Chiefs’ offseason moves thus far.

Kansas City signed Marquise “Hollywood” Brown in free agency, traded up to choose Xavier Worthy in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft, and head coach Andy Reid emphasized Kadarius Toney’s potential.

Chariah Gordon, Hardman’s longterm girlfriend who is expecting their second child, believes the couple’s return to Kansas City is better late than never. On Instagram Stories, she shared a snapshot of herself and Hardman at Arrowhead, captioned “Home is where the heart is.”

Gordon and Hardman have made Kansas City home for over five years. While Hardman began the 2023 season with the New York Jets after signing a one-year $4 million contract, the Chiefs traded for him back in October.

Following the deal, Hardman missed five regular-season games due to a thumb injury. He completed 14 throws for 118 yards in six games. While he didn’t play much in the playoffs, Hardman was essential in the Chiefs’ 25-22 overtime Super Bowl victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

He grabbed three passes for 57 yards, including quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ game-winning three-yard touchdown pass.

Chiefs superstar Chris Jones appeared both surprised and thrilled over Hardman’s return. Jones posted the announcement on X and wrote , “😳🚨…. The broski 🤞🏾.” Hardman, the Chiefs second-round pick from the 2019 NFL draft, is signing another one-year deal, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Chiefs Expected to Utilize Wide Receiver Mecole Hardman In a Different Role

Under the league’s new kickoff regulations, the Chiefs’ special teams could look very different in 2024. Schultz stated, “Aside from being a receiver, Mecole Hardman is another guy the #Chiefs might use on kickoffs under the NFL’s new kickoff rule. Kansas City offers a few options, including former rugby player Louis Rees-Zammit.

The Chiefs are also considering utilizing Rees-Zammit and safety Jordan Reid to kick off instead of Harrison Butker.

Given the Chiefs’ new receiver signings, CBS Sports’ John Breech thought that Hardman could be best suited for special teams.

“If Hardman is having trouble getting on the field as a receiver, he might be able to get a few more snaps in by playing special teams,” noted Breech. “The 26-year-old has some experience returning kickoffs. During his first season, he averaged 26.1 yards on kickoff returns, ranking fifth in the NFL among players who made 20 or more returns. He also recorded a 104-yard kick return touchdown in 2019.

Chiefs News: Mecole Hardman Could Be Insurance Amid Uncertainty Surrounding WR Rashee Rice’s Suspension

Hardman’s comeback comes as the Chiefs await Rashee Rice’s upcoming suspension. Kansas City’s No. 1 wide receiver is expected to miss multiple games after being involved in a six-vehicle car incident in Dallas on March 30.

However, the timing and duration of Rice’s suspension remain uncertain. On Thursday, SI’s Jordan Foote wrote, “Here’s how I think the group would shake out if KC had to make the decision today: Brown, Worthy, [Justin] Watson, [Skyy] Moore, Hardman and Toney make the roster while Rice is suspended.”

“When Rice returns, if injuries don’t make the decision for them, the Chiefs will have to make a final decision on Moore, Hardman or Toney.”
