Chiefs wide receiver recently cut signs with….

On December 12, the NFL’s official transaction wire featured a plethora of Kansas City Chiefs-related news as Week 15 of the 2023 season got began.

According to KSHB41 media member Nick Jacobs, reserve linebacker Cole Christiansen was reinstated from the practice squad/injured list, while reserve tight end Gerritt Prince was placed on the practice squad/injured list inside the KC organization.

Christiansen was raised twice early on in the game before sustaining a hamstring injury against the New York Jets in Week 4. For the 23 special teams snaps, he did not record any statistics.

Chase Cota, a wide receiver prospect recently cut by the Chiefs, signed a practice squad contract with the Houston Texans after spending little over two months with the Kansas City organization.

After playing in the preseason with the Detroit Lions, Cota first joined the Chiefs on September 26. On December 5, he was later freed when KC decided to add additional safety depth because Bryan Cook was hurt.

The undrafted rookie spent four seasons as a collegiate player at UCLA before moving to Oregon. During that five-year period in the PAC-12, he caught 103 passes for 1,380 yards and nine receiving touchdowns, according to Sports Reference CFB.

Ex-Chiefs RB Jerrion Ealy Gets Workout With Saints

Jerrion Ealy, the former running back for Kansas City, was the last Chiefs-related remark on the NFL transaction wire.

According to NFL source Aaron Wilson, the Ole Miss product was mentioned during a series of running back workouts with the New Orleans Saints. It seems that James Robinson, a veteran, was chosen by NOLA instead of Ealy, but it’s good to see the former Chiefs UDFA receiving some attention.

Ealy was signed and released by KC on multiple occasions in 2022, beginning in May of the previous year. Due to his skill as a returner, the young player was initially seen as a possible “ace in the hole” in special teams. He also garnered some popularity among the supporters.

Sadly, Ealy’s rookie season was interrupted by a PED ban, which deprived him six weeks of practice in Andy Reid and Dave Toub’s system.

Even after that, the running back was traded or retained by the Chiefs for their 2023 training camp, although he did not play a significant role in any regular season games. Since August 29 of this year, he has been a free agent.

Chiefs LB Core Regaining Health After Rash of Injuries

A few weeks ago, Nick Bolton and Drue Tranquill were both out with injuries, leaving the Chiefs down to Jack Cochrane at middle linebacker. Willie Gay Jr., Leo Chenal, and Cochrane were the starting three; only Darius Harris and rookie Cam Jones were available at the time due to the absence of the aforementioned Christiansen.

Fortunately, this unit appears to be getting healthier by the day in Week 15.

Bolton made a comeback prior to the Week 14 game against the Buffalo Bills, and Tranquill (concussion) shouldn’t lag behind him. Christiansen is also back on the practice squad, which again makes this one of the team’s best areas for depth reasons.

Having said that, Reid and his team will probably have to make a difficult choice about health. The Chiefs will have seven linebackers on the active roster after Tranquill returns. Not including special teams, that is significantly above the league average and a little too much for a defense that plays most games with two to three men at the position.

Most likely, Harris is the odd man out. As they have in the past, Kansas City may attempt to smuggle the veteran back onto the practice squad if they decide to release him.

Jones, an Indiana rookie who went undrafted, is an additional choice. Given that Jones has played on special teams in each of the 13 games this season, it seems unlikely.
