BYU had ten quarterbacks on their roster entering spring camp.

With fall camp approaching, only six quarterbacks remain. The quarterback battle will be the main narrative of fall camp. BYU’s roster has four quarterbacks with FBS experience. Today, we’re previewing the quarterback position ahead of Fall Camp.

Returning Players

  • 12 – Jake Retzlaff
  • 16 – Cole Hagen

Jake Retzlaff is the sole scholarship quarterback returning in 2024. There is a case for and against Retzlaff being the starting quarterback this season. In an ideal environment, Retzlaff would make significant progress in 2024, giving BYU a reliable starter for the next two years. If Retzlaff isn’t good enough and Gerry Bohanon wins the position, BYU will return to the quarterback market at the end of the season.

2024 Signees

  • 19 – Noah Lugo

Noah Lugo is a true freshman quarterback from Texas. He is inexperienced, particularly as a passer, but his potential is apparent. He is a tremendous dual-threat quarterback who has the ability to take it to the house on any given play.

Lugo will not fight for a starting position this season, but his improvement is a crucial topic to watch during camp. The last three BYU high school quarterback signees – Ryder Burton, Sol-Jay Maiava-Peters, and Jacob Conover – have not performed well. That is unsustainable for BYU. One of these quarterback signees needs to become the Cougars’ starting quarterback.

Transfers

  • 3 – Gerry Bohanon
  • 10 – Treyson Bourguet
  • 15 – McCae Hillstead

The majority of BYU’s scholarship quarterbacks were on different rosters last season, but Gerry Bohanon is fully capable of winning the job if his shoulder is healthy. When he is healthy, he is a P4 starting quarterback, dynamic with his legs, and dangerous as a passer.

Treyson Bourguet and McCae Hillstead are competing to be BYU’s future starting quarterback. They will also add significant depth in 2024. If injuries occur at the quarterback position, as they have so often, BYU has a few experienced players to turn to. McCae Hillstead showed a lot of promise in his true freshman season at Utah State. If Hillstead can adapt to the pace of the game at the P4 level, he has the arm talent to be BYU’s starting quarterback.
