This week, BYU announced an updated roster for fall camp.

The Cougars announced nine transfers on their 2024 roster, down from 22 in 2023. Prior to the first year of Big 12 competition, BYU depended extensively on the transfer portal to add FBS-ready players to the team. Going into 2024, the strategy is different. BYU is relying on roster continuity in 2024.

The Cougars had a major lack of roster continuity in 2023. When the Cougars opened the 2023 season against Sam Houston, they started ten newcomers. As Aaron Roderick has pointed out several times this offseason, a lack of continuity hampered BYU’s offensive execution, particularly up front. In Roderick’s own words, BYU’s personnel misjudged the importance of roster consistency in 2023, and they have modified their thinking for 2024.

In an era where rosters are shifting over at unprecedented rates, roster constancy has become a more valuable competitive advantage than ever before. BYU basketball is an excellent example of the advantages of roster consistency in college sports. The Cougars outperformed expectations in every manner, thanks to the improvement of individual players throughout the roster. BYU football plans to follow a similar script in 2024.

Last season, BYU basketball was projected to finish 13th in the Big 12. Coincidentally, BYU football was recently projected to finish 13th in the Big 12 preseason poll.
