BYU football announces date and opponent for 100th season celebration

With BYU’s 100th football season beginning on August 31st, let’s take a look at some of the already announced events that will accompany the Cougars’ second season in the Big 12.

On October 7, 1922, the Brigham Young University Cougars played their inaugural collegiate football game. The game, held in Provo against Utah Agricultural College (now Utah State), was a slaughter. BYU lost 41-3 in their first encounter. A little more than a month later, the BYU football team won their first game against Wyoming. 100 football seasons later, we reach the 2024 season.

Those 100 seasons were filled with amazing wins and sad defeats, as well as memorable players who made incredible plays. 100 seasons with a Heisman Trophy, a Doak Walker Award, four Davy O’Brien Awards, seven Sammy Baugh trophies, two Outland Trophies, 85 All-Americans, 23 conference championships, and a national championship.

100 seasons of bib jerseys, footlong maple donuts, living right on and off the field, resulting in magic, playing Bo Diddly Tech, the Miracle Bowl and Cotton Bowl, Harline remaining open, a viral dancing mascot, and 4th and 18 conversions. It is only fitting that a program like BYU football be recognized for 100 seasons. Here’s everything we know about the upcoming season’s celebrations. BYU50

BYU50 will return this year, with fan events and gear drops taking place in each state of the United States. BYU50 will begin in Alabama on July 12 and end in Wyoming on August 30. Social media, particularly Twitter and Instagram, is usually the greatest location to get updates on BYU50 releases.

Gameday Activities

This season’s home games will feature special festivities and recognitions honoring some of the most famous players and teams from the previous 100 seasons. BYU’s inaugural bowl team will be honored on August 31st against Southern Illinois, 50 years after they competed in the Fiesta Bowl. On October 12 against Arizona, BYU’s national award winners (Heisman Trophy, Doak Walker Award, etc.) will be honored. BYU’s 1984 National Championship team will be honored on October 18th versus Oklahoma State to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Cougars’ first national championship. On November 16th, each BYU player elected into the College Football Hall of Fame will be honored during the game against Kansas. The remaining home games’ festivities are yet to be announced.

Best Moments Bracket

Over the last 100 seasons, BYU football has had a variety of outstanding events. Fans will have the opportunity to vote in a tournament of Best Football Moments. The bracket will include historic events like the Miracle Bowl, Lavell’s final game, Beck to Harline, Mangum Miracles, and HB Pass to Steve Young, among others. This will be a fantastic opportunity for BYU football fans to revisit some of the best moments in the program’s history while also showing support for their favorite players. Voting starts in mid-July.

Special TV Program

On July 27th, BYUtv will telecast a special two-hour program called BYU Football: A Celebration of 100 Seasons. Former players and coaches will take part in a walk down memory lane, providing fans with an inside look at BYU football history.

New Uniforms

The BYU 100 website has hinted that new jerseys would be revealed for the upcoming season, but there are no information on what they will look like or when they will be released. It’s logical to expect throwback uniforms to honor the 100th season. Will the Cougars wear only one new uniform, or will they debut two fresh looks? As long as the “bib” jerseys do not return, I believe this will be an exciting time.

These enjoyable events, among others, will heighten anticipation for the next football season. Hopefully, the Cougs can use some of their prior success to thrive this season. Given the cautious confidence expressed by some media members regarding the club, the 2024 team will be expected to outperform betting victory totals of 4.5 games.
