Burnley is in competition with Middlesbrough and Cardiff City to land former West Brom star; two other clubs link as well

Ahmed Hegazy is a target for Middlesbrough and Cardiff City during the January transfer window.

The two Championship teams are reportedly monitoring the former West Brom star in advance of the winter market opening, according to Teamtalk.

Before leaving the Baggies in 2021 to join Al-Ittihad, Hegazy played for the team for four years and made almost a hundred appearances.

The Egyptian has expertise in the Premier League and helped Albion return from the Championship in the 2019–20 season.

The 32-year-old has been playing football in Saudi Arabia for the past two years, but in 2024 he may return to English football.

Who is interested in Ahmed Hegazy?

Hegazy has slipped in the Saudi club’s hierarchy as a result of a summer transfer of top players from other European teams.

Many English clubs are keeping a close eye on the defender because he may be free to leave Al-Ittiahad in January.

Two teams that have been identified as interested in signing the center back are Boro and Cardiff.

They do, however, have opposition from Burnley and Sheffield United in the Premier League.

With Celtic and Rangers, two of Scotland’s biggest clubs, both interested in signing the youngster in January, there will be fierce competition for his services.

The Bluebirds and Middlesbrough want to compete for promotion in the second half of the season.

In the meantime, Burnley and Sheffield United are involved in the premier league’s relegation struggle.

The defender is looking to leave Saudi football, but he might also get a chance to win over Marcelo Gallardo, the new manager who took over for Nuno Espirito Santo recently.

Hegazy has also experienced severe injury problems in recent years; he only fully healed at the conclusion of the previous season from a third ACL injury.

Following a round of midweek action in the second division, Cardiff and Middlesbrough are ranked ninth and tenth in the Championship table, respectively.

Rivals West Brom defeated Erol Bulut’s team 1-0 at home, while Preston North End was soundly defeated 4-0 at the Riverside by Boro.

The two teams are only separated by goal difference, and after 18 games, the difference in points needed to qualify for the playoffs is now just three.

Cardiff’s next game is scheduled for December 2 at St. Mary’s against Southampton; Michael Carrick’s team is scheduled to play Leeds United at Elland Road at the same time.

Would Ahmed Hegazy be a good January signing?

During his four years at West Brom, Hegazy played in both the top and second tiers of English football, giving him a wealth of experience in the sport.

He has, however, been fighting at a lower level for the past few years, so it might take some time for him to get back to a more competitive level.

Given that he has missed a lot of game time recently due to injuries, his problems are also cause for concern.

If the 32-year-old were to sign, his entrance would essentially be a stopgap measure for both parties because he is probably past his prime at this point in his career.
