Bruins have found a perfect replacement for Linus Ullmark

Many were disappointed with the return when the Boston Bruins dealt 2023 Vezina Trophy winner Linus Ullmark to the division rival Ottawa Senators in exchange for two NHL players and a 2024 first-round selection.

The Bruins appeared to receive less than the Calgary Flames received from the New Jersey Devils in exchange for goaltender Jacob Markstrom.

The draft pick is the Bruins’ initial first-round selection, 25th overall. The disturbing aspect of the return was leaky goaltender Joonas Korpisalo and fourth-liner Mark Kastelic.

Many were startled, if not disappointed, to learn that the trade may have a second life. According to TSN Insider Pierre LeBrun, a team has risen to the top of the list in the NHL trade rumors for Carolina Hurricanes forward Martin Necas.

LeBrun did not name the team on TSN, but did say it has a first-round pick.

Yes, the Bruins have now qualified.

Necas’ trade request became public shortly after Carolina’s season ended, with a loss to the New York Rangers in Round Two. His father confirmed the news on social media, reporting that the athlete would prefer to play elsewhere with a larger role.

The Bruins were immediately linked.

The Bruins and general manager Don Sweeney have been looking for top talent for several seasons, a need that will be increased by Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci’s retirements in 2023.

Necas is said to have top-six skill, both on the wing and at center.

LeBrun did identify the Buffalo Sabres as another team with strong interest.

The NHL draft’s first round takes place on Friday at the Sphere in Las Vegas. Rounds two through seven take place on Saturday.
