Bruins and Maple Leafs May Compete for Golden Knights’ Stephenson

There is a line building to bid on Chandler Stephenson’s services.

That’s bad news for the Vegas Golden Knights’ chances of retaining him at a discounted rate.

Elliotte Friedman, a Sportsnet insider, has suggested that the Boston Bruins could sign Stephenson if he becomes available. They’ve been searching for a productive center since Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci retired from the NHL.

Meanwhile, Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta reports that the Bruins, Maple Leafs, and Nashville Predators are among the teams showing interest in Stephenson. He has averaged 60 points a season over the last three seasons.

Stephenson’s representative is anticipated to speak with the Golden Knights soon about what he would need to remain with the team.

AFP Analytics predicts Stephenson, 30, will get a five-year contract worth $5.6 million per season on the open market. If he has numerous suitors bidding vigorously, he may earn more than $6 million.

All of this is troublesome for Vegas General Manager Kelly McCrimmon. He technically has almost $900,000 in cap room for next season, with 20 players contracted. However, he anticipates receiving an additional $5 million from Robin Lehner, who will be on Long-Term Injured Reserve for one more season.

Don’t forget that he has Jonathan Marchessault, who is also unsigned and can certainly get $6 million on the free market.

With his existing cap space, McCrimmon may be unable to sign either of them. He could consider trading some players.

During the offseason, NHL teams are granted a 10% cap overage. That would allow them to sign Marchessault and Stephenson while also working on their fitness throughout the summer.

The Golden Knights appear to have no chance of re-signing Anthony Mantha, Alec Martinez, William Carrier, or Michael Amadio.
