Browns Will Face Battle for Bill Callahan’s Replacement

After attempting to fill multiple assistant coach positions, including offensive coordinator, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski now faces another one.

On Thursday night, reports surfaced that highly regarded offensive line coach Bill Callahan was leaving the organization to join his son, newly appointed Titans head coach Brian Callahan, in Tennessee. Many, including members of the team’s management in Berea, expected the transfer, but Cleveland suffered a significant loss.

Stefanski must now replace the vacancy as soon as possible, and one likely candidate may face stiff competition.

The Browns interviewed Seahawks offensive line coach Andy Dickerson two weeks ago as part of their search for an offensive coordinator, despite the fact that he has never called plays in his coaching career. That conversation, however, could have served as a harbinger to Callahan’s departure, as the team was conducting due diligence on potential replacements for offensive line coach.

It’s unknown whether the Browns will seek Dickerson for the post now that Callahan’s departure is confirmed. If they do, they are not alone, as Mike Reiss of ESPN reported Thursday night that the Patriots and first-year head coach Jerrod Mayo are now interested in hiring Dickerson as their next offensive line coach. That announcement comes after allegations circulated that New England had signed former Browns offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt for the same post.

Dickerson has ties to both the Browns and the Patriots during his coaching career. He began his career with New England as an operations intern in 2004, and went on to win a Super Bowl with the team the same year. He departed the organization after serving in the same position in 2005 to join the Jets as a quality control coach.
