Browns Offer 2-Word Latest on Starting QB Situation
Since Dorian Thompson-Robinson has not yet cleared the concussion protocol, Joe Flacco is expected to return to the starting lineup for the Cleveland Browns.
Following Thompson-Robinson’s absence from Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams, the Browns gave an update on him on Monday. The straightforward response from Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski to the question of whether Thompson-Robinson is still in concussion protocol was, “He is.”
Not long after franchise quarterback Deshaun Watson was declared out for the remainder of the season due to a broken shoulder bone, Thompson-Robinson was appointed the starting quarterback. In the games against the Pittsburgh Steelers and Denver Broncos, Thompson-Robinson started both. He took a severe blow to the head in the third quarter against the Broncos, which resulted in his elimination from the game.
Prior to that, Thompson-Robinson made an early interception in a Week 4 game against the Baltimore Ravens. After that, the Browns handed the ball over to PJ Walker, who started the next two games and played much of the third game as Watson attempted a comeback but left the game after one quarter. Walker, if Thompson-Robinson is cleared, will be the number three quarterback on the depth chart.
Browns Still Not Ready to Name Joe Flacco Starting QB
After signing on November 20, Flacco started against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday. The former MVP of the Super Bowl completed the game with two touchdowns and 254 yards on 23 of 44 passes. In the fourth quarter, his lone error happened at the wrong moment. He attempted a deep pass intended for Elijah Moore with 6:32 remaining in the game, but Rams safety John Johnson III intercepted it.
After the game, Stefanski did not support Flacco as the starting quarterback, and he was not prepared to do so on Monday either.
Stefanski declared, “I’m not going to get into those kinds of things on Monday.” “We’ll figure that out.”
That’s not to say Flacco didn’t impress Stefanski; after all, he brought some seasoned poise to the job.
“In terms of operation, I felt Joe did a good job. We entered and exited the huddle with precision, according to Stefanski. “We weren’t flawless. We made a couple less-than-ideal alignment-related decisions. However, I felt Joe performed admirably in the huddle, as one should anticipate from a seasoned player like Joe.
Joe Flacco Wants Another Crack at Starting Gig With Browns
After the 36-19 loss, Flacco was disappointed, and he was mostly upset about the expensive interception.
During his press conference, Flacco stated, “Yeah, I’m just upset at myself.” In the end, Flacco says, “it was just a bad decision.” “I threw that pass a little late. I had time in the pocket and really wanted to get set, but they simply matched everything, and I lost sight of the safety drifting back there.
Despite being unemployed for almost three months of the season, 38-year-old Flacco was confident in his ability to play. He demonstrated it against the Rams, and he hopes to give the Browns another chance to win.
“You want to prolong the experience of playing football whenever you get a small taste of it,” Flacco remarked.
On December 10, the Browns take on the Jacksonville Jaguars in an attempt to snap their two-game losing streak.
