Browns’ New $36 Million Player Could Miss the Remaindering Regular Season

After recently agreeing to a contract deal with the Cleveland Browns, outstanding safety Grant Delpit could miss the remainder of the regular season due to a groin ailment.

On Monday, Delpit formally signed a $36 million, three-year contract deal with the Browns. The group released a statement to formally announce it.

Delpit declared, “I’m eager to advance my career in Cleveland.” Since the day of my draft, the city has only showed me affection. The Haslams, [Andrew Berry], my coaches, and my teammates—I have nothing but praise for everyone and the atmosphere since coming here. I’m excited to carry on this successful culture and return the favors that Cleveland has shown me. Although I am frustrated that the injury happened yesterday, I am making every effort to recover quickly in order to support the team’s victory.

Delpit will have to postpone his festivities. He sustained a groin injury that forced him to leave Sunday’s victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, he is a “candidate” for injured reserve. Delpit would have to miss a minimum of four games if he gets placed on injured reserve. And that concludes the regular season.

The Browns “definitely hope that Delpit returns for this crucial home stretch, but he may be placed on injured reserve, which would require him to miss the final four games,” according to Cabbot.

Browns Still Awaiting Final Word on Grant Delpit

Delpit, a 2020 second-round selection, had seven tackles for a loss to go along with his 83 tackles, which leads the Browns. He has played a significant role in Cleveland’s defensive transformation. If he is out of commission for any length of time, it will be missed.

“I’m very excited to further my career in Cleveland,” Delpit added. “Since the day I was drafted, the city has shown me nothing but love.” I can’t say enough amazing things about the Haslams, AB, and all of my coaches and teammates while I’ve been here. I’m looking forward to continue this winning culture and repaying the love that Cleveland has shown me. It’s unfortunate that the injury occurred on Sunday, but I’m doing everything I can to return as quickly as possible to help the team win.”

The Browns have not decided whether or not to place Delpit on injured reserve. According to head coach Kevin Stefanski, the squad is currently waiting for additional information.

“Still working through that injury and getting some more clarity on that one,” Stefanski said of Delpit on Monday.

Browns Battling Through Injuries All Over Field

Delpit’s injury is the latest in a string of misfortunes for the Browns this season. Already out are Pro Bowl cornerback Denzel Ward and veteran safety Juan Thonrhill, who has a calf ailment.

No one in Cleveland, however, is making excuses. The Browns are still in the driver’s seat for a postseason place, sitting at 8-5.

“There’s no quitting in us, and there never will be,” Browns quarterback Myles Garrett said on Sunday, December 10. “Not a single man will falter or waiver in the face of adversity, whether personally or as a team.” We’ll all point in the same direction and keep our eyes on the prize.”

This week, the Browns travel to Chicago to face the Bears. This season, Chicago has struggled at times, but they are now on a two-game winning run.
