Browns HC Kevin Stefanski, In Danger Of Being Fired

Though the Browns’ 2023 season has not gone as planned in terms of injuries, as of Week 13, the team is in a playoff position.

Thus, there is no discussion about head coach Kevin Stefanski’s and general manager Andrew Berry’s job security.

Given the quality of Cleveland’s roster and the yearly decline in win-loss percentage that had occurred during their three-year terms, both came into the season with high hopes. Despite the loss of players such as running back Nick Chubb and quarterback Deshaun Watson to season-ending injuries, the team has managed to secure a 7-4 start and a solid chance to make the playoffs. The squad’s early success has eliminated any chance of a change in the front office or on the field.

According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, Berry and Stefanski are “here to stay” (subscription needed). After managing the squad to an 11-5 record and advancing to the divisional round of the playoffs, the former was named Coach of the Year in 2020. But in 2022—the first season under Watson’s leadership—a regression to 8-9 occurred, as did a 7-10 record (though Watson’s ban kept him from playing for the Browns until Week 12 of that season). That regression made some think that, absent reforms, the pressure on the Stefanski-Berry regime could rise rapidly.

It should come as no surprise that there was no coaching change made this past summer, and Stefanski’s success as a coach in 2023 has also deservedly given him more time. The Browns are responsible for the consequences of Watson’s acquisition, which involved a trade package that included three first-round picks and a fully guaranteed $230 million contract. Although the former Texans Pro Bowler has not performed to expectations in Cleveland thus far, the team has received high marks for its ability to win even without him in the starting lineup or for his on-field performance.

That will be put to the test further as rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson is out for Week 13, which means Joe Flacco will start. If the veteran’s late-season addition enables the Browns to maintain their winning ways despite having a severely undermanned offense and contend for a postseason spot in the congested AFC, it will have been a wise move. But even if that turns out not to be the case, Berry and Stefanski seem to have earned some extra time off going into the summer.
