Browns Give Commanders Permission To Interview Assistant GM

While the Browns are preparing for the playoffs, a member of the executive office is attracting interest for a position with the Commander.

Being a winning NFL team is both a blessing and a curse. The Browns are nearing the end of their winning streak.

The Washington Commanders are looking to replace their vacancy at general manager and have reached out to the Browns about interviewing assistant GM and VP of Player Personnel Glenn Cook one day after the 2023 regular season ended. According to rumors, Cook has been granted permission to interview for the position with the Browns in the coming weeks.

Washington is in the process of revamping their whole front office and coaching staff after parting ways with head coach Ron Rivera on what has become known as “Black Monday” throughout the league. Given the recent ownership transition to American businessman Josh Harris, dramatic changes inside an organization like the Commanders are not unusual.

The team’s interest in Cook came after Harris announced that he had hired former Golden State Warriors executive Bob Myers and ex-Vikings GM Rick Spielman to assist with the respective searches for coach and GM.

Cook has been in the Browns front office since 2016, when he joined the team as a member of then-GM Sashi Brown’s staff. When current President of Football Operations Andrew Berry took over the department in 2020, he retained him and soon promoted him to his current position.

Cook recently interviewed for the Titans’ open general manager position, which was eventually filled by Ran Carthon. Cook also lost the Vikings general manager position in 2022 to a former Browns colleague, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, who was the VP of Football Operations at the time.

If Cook is hired elsewhere, the Browns will earn a compensatory pick as part of the league’s 2020 commitment to foster more diverse and inclusive hiring across teams’ coaching, personnel, and football operations staffs. For each head coach or top football relations appointment filled by a diverse member of their staff, teams are awarded with a third round compensatory selection in the next two drafts.
