Browns Are Pressed to Rip Old Quarterback From New Home To Replace Deshaun Watson

The Cleveland Browns have a quarterback shortage and may look to a well-known player to assist fill the vacuum left by Deshaun Watson’s questionable status: Jacoby Brissett.

This week, Brissett has gained popularity in Cleveland as a possible solution to the Browns’ quarterback dilemma. After taking a strong hit, Watson left Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts.

Watson will not play for the Browns in their Week 8 game against the Seattle Seahawks, the organization confirmed on Wednesday. Rather, he will seek shoulder rehabilitation in an attempt to regain his former self.

The Browns have few choices for Watson’s replacement. PJ Walker, who led Cleveland to two victories, will start, although he has shown himself to be below average. Walker is only making fifty percent of his passes complete. Three interceptions and 370 yards have been recorded by him.

Commanders Shopping Players Ahead of Trade Deadline

Right now, Brissett is using the Washington Commanders to support Sam Howell. After starting 11 games in the previous season when Watson was suspended, the 30-year-old quarterback is familiar with the Browns’ scheme and knows how to handle the ball.

Throughout his career, which has included 48 starts, Brissett has passed for 48 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. As Watson’s backup last season, Brissett performed admirably, tossing 12 touchdown passes and only six interceptions.

Before the October 31 trade deadline, Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com thinks a deal can be reached to return Brissett to the Browns.

Before Tuesday’s trade deadline, Cabot stated, “the Browns could probably pry quarterback Jacoby Brissett away from the Commanders, and they should definitely try.” The Commanders are considering trade proposals for a number of players who are free agents this offseason, including potential pass rushers Montez Sweat and Chase Young. Brissett is one of those players, a league source informed Cleveland.com.

Jacoby Brissett Trade Wouldn’t Be Costly for Browns

For the Browns, making a play for Brissett wouldn’t be financially disastrous. According to Cabot, Cleveland would only have to pay Brissett for the next 11 games of the season, or $1.833 million.

The Commanders’ asking price in exchange for their backup quarterback is what would be in dispute. Although it appears improbable that Brissett could pass Howell in the depth chart, Washington appreciates his locker room leadership.

This offseason, the Browns decided not to re-sign Brissett as their backup quarterback, but he has no animosity toward his previous organization.

In April, Brissett remarked, “It was good.” “I literally have nothing negative to say about that group, that group of players, or the supporters. They welcomed me with wide arms. I therefore don’t feel negatively or poorly about them.

Even with his familiarity with the playbook, it would be difficult for Brissett to start against the Seahawks even if the Browns were to pull off the trade this week. Walker is now the team’s starting quarterback, at least for the next week.

You don’t always get that much lead time when serving as a backup. Regarding backup quarterbacks, that’s simply part of life in the big city, according to Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski. “He’ll be ready, as he usually is. As usual, Dorian (Thompson-Robinson) will get ready. However, P.J. will begin this week.

Following an impressive preseason, Thompson-Robinson was ranked as the No. 2 quarterback going into the season. But after he was awarded the starting position against the Baltimore Ravens, it was evident that he was not prepared to assume the lead. The Browns lost 28-3 after Thompson-Robinson threw three interceptions.
