Browns amends Joe Flacco’s deal for not playing in Week 18

With the NFL playoffs approaching, the Browns honor the veteran quarterback’s contract.

Few could have predicted how far QB Joe Flacco and the Cleveland Browns would go together when they signed him to the practice squad. Flacco was acquired a few days before Thanksgiving to assist newly appointed starters Dorian Thompson-Robinson and PJ Walker.

After agreeing to an active roster contract with Flacco in mid-December, the Browns were assured of a playoff spot by late December.

The organization had to make an unusual $75K decision as part of Flacco’s deal. Flacco got that amount for every game in which he started and the team won. The Browns are sitting veterans in Week 18 in order to protect them.

That means Flacco will not be able to collect the $75,000 incentive.

Cleveland’s executive management made certain that their starting quarterback received his due:

Browns QB Joe Flacco’s deal includes a $75K incentive for each game he plays 50% of the snaps and the team wins. With Flacco resting tomorrow, the team converted that incentive to a $75K bonus for being on the 53-man roster to ensure he gets the money. Nice touch by Cleveland.

In the grand scheme of things, the $75K is insignificant for both the team and Flacco (who earned more than $150 million in the NFL). Making certain that a veteran is valued and cared for, both financially and physically, is something that players (both on the Browns and pending free agents) will notice.
