Breaking: Trevor Etienne explains decision to move to Georgia

Trevor Etienne transferred from Florida due to his status as a backup and his constant losing record.

Georgia provided remedies to both of these difficulties.

Daijun Edwards and Kendall Milton recently delivered strong performances at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. While Georgia is pleased to see a couple of its running backs doing well in preparation for the draft, their departures leave a vacuum in the team’s running back depth chart.

Kirby Smart and his team filled that issue during this offseason, signing former Florida running back Trevor Etienne via the transfer portal. Etienne, the No. 2 ranked rushing back in this year’s portal, spoke on Georgia offensive lineman Tate Ratledge’s “Real Talker Player Podcast” about his choice to transfer to Georgia.

“For me, it was a question of whether the good outweighed the bad. I’ve been with Florida for two years, and I went through the entire rebuilding process, which was still ongoing. And I felt like there were a lot of uncertainties, like a lot of things remained unanswered, like there was a lot of uncertainty going on.”

Despite averaging more than six yards per touch, Etienne was backing up Florida running back Montrell Johnson. The notion of being a backup on a losing squad did not appeal to Etienne.

“I feel like I either stay [in Florida] and continue what I’ve been doing for another year or two, or I can bet on myself and take a risk elsewhere. So, to summarize, I had the option between running back two for a losing team or going somewhere where I wanted to play in December. That was also an important factor in my decision to transfer.

Playing important games in December is definitely something Georgia can provide. The Bulldogs have competed in six of the last seven SEC Championships and won two of the last three national titles. Florida has yet to reach the College Football Playoff.

“So I could stay, be running back two on a losing team or go somewhere and you know, possibly [be] running back one and win a natty.”
