Breaking: Travaris Robinson will remain at UGA regardless

Travaris Robinson will remain at Georgia after interviewing with new Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer for the position of defensive coordinator for the Crimson Tide on Sunday, according to ESPN.

Robinson spent the previous two seasons as Alabama’s cornerbacks coach under Nick Saban and had a larger role in the defense this season. However, three days after Saban announced his retirement on Wednesday, Robinson was named Georgia’s co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach. Robinson took over for Will Muschamp, who was promoted to an off-field analyst position. Glenn Schumann is Georgia’s key defensive playcaller.

DeBoer was named Alabama’s coach on Friday night, and as he continues to form his staff, he took a shot at keeping Robinson, who was a major member of Alabama’s defensive staff as well as one of the Tide’s top recruiters. Robinson, on the other hand, decided to stick with his original choice and attend Georgia.

Robinson has a wealth of SEC experience. He played at Auburn and was South Carolina’s defensive coordinator from 2016 to 2020 under Muschamp before being let go by Shane Beamer when Muschamp was fired. Robinson worked as a defensive backs coach at Florida from 2011 to 2014, then at Auburn in 2015, before joining Muschamp at South Carolina.

Alabama running backs coach Robert Gillespie and defensive line coach Freddie Roach are anticipated to remain on staff under DeBoer, who expects to bring several members of his Washington staff with him, including offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb. Last year, Saban interviewed Grubb for the position of offensive coordinator at Alabama.
