After a more than two-decade career that included 22 Grand Slam titles, Nadal is preparing to retire from professional tennis.

Rafael Nadal is likely to retire from competitive tennis next month after competing in the 2024 Davis Cup finals.

Nadal, a 22-time Grand Slam winner, stated on Thursday that the Davis Cup ‘final 8’, in which Spain faces the Netherlands in the quarter-finals, will be the final tournament of his brilliant 23-year professional career.

Davis Cup career finale “really exciting”, Nadal says

“It’s really exciting for me that my last tournament will be the Davis Cup finals, representing my country,” the Spaniard said in a video message broadcast on social media.

“I think I’ll be coming full circle, because one of the first great joys of my career as a professional tennis player was in the Davis Cup final in Seville in 2004 [when Spain beat the United States to win their second title.]”

When are the 2024 Davis Cup finals?

The Palacio de Deportes José María Martín Carpena in Malaga, Spain, will host the 2024 Davis Cup finals from November 19 to 24.

Spain’s quarter-final against the Netherlands will be the first tie of the championships, beginning on November 19 at 5pm CET (11am ET/8am PT). Nadal will join Carlos Alcaraz, Pablo Carreño Busta, and Marcel Granollers in the Spanish Davis Cup lineup.

Nadal “ready” for Van de Zandschulp clash

Spain’s Davis Cup captain has hinted that Nadal will face Botic van de Zandschulp in a singles match in the quarter-finals against the Dutch.

Ferrer told the ‘Sala de Jugadores’ YouTube channel earlier this month (via Tennis365): “When the draw was revealed, I wrote him a message and told him to get ready to face Botic van de Zandschulp. His reaction was straightforward: ‘I’ll be ready.'”

If Spain defeats the Netherlands, Nadal and his countrymen will advance to a semi-final match against either Germany or Canada on November 22.
